Silica

Silica sand has been used for many years as a natural water filter in different processes.

The sand is composed of 97% or more of SiO₂; it is a highly abrasive material and durable in all currently existing filtering processes. The grain's surface, which has no pores, assists in cleaning material through back wash, allowing it to be used for an extensive length of time.

Sand filters filter the water through a deep layer of substrate that is graduated by particle size. The filtering particles are composed mostly of silica sand, gravel, and other materials that are granular in structure.

The filtering rate is determined by the particle size of the substrate and the speed of the water passing through the filter.
